Gotta say, this place is finally startin' to feel like a prison. [He's not especially bothered by it.]

And what the Admiral said wasn't far off. You can all whine and throw your fits 'bout having your alcohol taken away and your high tech gym closed off, but this is a goddamn prison. Fact is, most of us deserve a hell of a lot worse than what we've been getting.

Buck up, would you? This isn't a resort. We're here for a reason, maybe you should think about what that is.

How's that work out with Cassandra?

[ She has that habit, yeah. ]

She's pretty happy with it. Actually she's the one who gave me the outfit.

She gave you hers?

[That's surprising, if so. And it doesn't fit Steph at all; this girl has an endless supply of words.]

I got my own design after a while, obviously. It needed more purple.

[He laughs, because really, he hasn't seen a lot of people get done with Batman and still come out with a favorite color.

And then he can't help but wince inwardly, because does Cassandra have a favorite? Has she ever considered it? Could she even tell someone if they asked?]

...You're from ahead of me, seems like. How's... [Cassandra] ...the city?

Pretty much like it's always been. One disaster after another but the good guys still come out on top.

What happened before you, you know, died? [ Because it's Cain, why does she give a shit about sensitivity. ]

['Good guys' is still a term that he is much too cynical to take seriously.

And her lack of sensitivity just earns her a grin and a shrug.]

I turned myself in, got locked up in solitary. They were transferring me to another prison and one of my former washed up pupils decided to take a shot at me.

Oh man, that was like, forever ago. [ That was before the gang war. Before everything. ]

You are so far behind the times, man.

You wanna catch me up? [On the Cassandra parts, if nothing else. There's a distinct note of anxiety in his voice.]

Not particularly. Cass doesn't talk about you a lot, but she talks enough for me to know that I hate your guts.

[Snort] Figured that was a given.

I meant her, she okay?

What the hell do you care? You're even worse than my dad and I sure as hell wouldn't give him the time of day.

I'm not your dad. [He does care.]

She's my best friend. So you see, I have even less reason to do anything that might bring you happiness of any kind.

[He's quiet a moment, like he's not really sure he heard that right.]

It's not about my happiness, kid. It's about hers. Batman's a real train wreck, but I thought he could show her how to be...more than he is. Since she got a best friend out of it, I have to figure that I was right.

That doesn't change the fact that he's a bastard and he could hurt her in ways I couldn't. I don't want that, and neither do you.

And before you start questioning how serious I am, well I ended up here instead of splattered on a sidewalk like I was angling for so there's a good chance she's right, and I can at least do something with my life that's not a waste.

[ Oh, she knows the ways that Batman cans crew things up. Lord knows she does. But Cain? A man who shoots his daughter to make her 'stronger'? That's worse. ]

Or, because I'm her friend and I love her I can make sure she doesn't get hurt, without abusing her.

Well I can cheer you on for tryin', but you're not really naive enough to think that's gonna happen, are you?

Yeah, actually, I am. Because I'm not demented enough to think that your way would ever work.

My way didn't work. No one's arguing that.

But we're human beings, Batgirl, you're gonna hurt her someday. So's Batman--but I worry about him because I know how unstable he can be and how much she respects him. Dangerous combo, don't you think?

Yeah, and I know how much a demented father figure can mess up a kid. You've hurt her more than enough already.

Then you see why I'm not talking to her.

And you see why I will never trust you.

Yeah. [He knocks back the last of his whiskey, eyes the empty glass like maybe he can find a last drop in there.] Good talk.
