It does. Food is a staple. Someone dies, you bring food. Someone gets hurt, or gets married or has a baby....food.

[Cain smiles, and wonders how it will go. He won't be there to see--Cass would likely punch him in the throat if he showed his face right now--but he hopes she'll smile. For Ned, at least, if not for him.]

[Not quite knowing what to do with that sort of sentiment, the Piemaker instead retreats to what he knows best: baking]

Milk, flour, vanilla, and baking powder.

[Cain gathers them quickly--the kitchen is always neatly organized when he works--and he lays it all out in the exact order Ned asked for them.]

[The Piemaker looks over the ingredients with approval, nodding. He pushes over the bowl with the whisked eggs.]

Wet ingredients get mixed together first. Dry ingredients are sifted together, then added slowly to wet.

[The Piemaker has a very alarming sense of time. He pauses when he sees the vigorous mixing, and puts his hand nervously on Cain's shoulder]

It doesn't have to be quite that...powerful.

I don't cope well with change. It was three weeks before I felt comfortable leaving my room.
