[This is the first time she's ever death tolled that he hasn't waited at her side for her to wake up. But he knows himself, and he knows that right now the safest thing for everyone is if he is nowhere near her.

So instead there's a message waiting for her.]

You've got a lot of fuckin' nerve doing what you did, darlin'.

[And between all that he'll be wandering, mostly hanging out at the pool, which so far has only pretty happy memories. Nothing that he has the urge to scream at or shoot; progress!

[He'll probably see that side of her sooner or later, but luckily he's spent so long as an assassin that it's really hard to chase him off or disturb him.]

About being here, you mean. Yeah, me too.

[Fast as he is, the room isn't quite large enough that he got out of the splash completely. He's pretty soaked, but laughing.]

You thinking about being a warden when your time's up? You'd be a really good balance to all the hardasses we've got right now.

[She hasn't thought about it at all-- for a lot of reasons, one of which is that she's a terrible forward thinker.]

You think I'd be good at it?

Yeah. I mean you've got a handle on dealing with the inmates already. You've got a better attitude about the rules than most the wardens do. I guess it comes down to if you want to work one on one with someone who's figuring out how to unfuck their life.

[And he dives in, though without the splashiness she'd had]

[Wow she is super flattered by all of this, and not even thinking about the fact that he might change his tune if he knew more about her.]

I do have a handle on dealing with inmates. I was in another prison before this.

[Where most people disliked her. And in the short time she's been here, she's gotten into two fights, provided another inmate with alcohol against his warden's wishes, and broken into someone's room because somebody told her to.

She sees no reason to bring up any of that.]

[Some of it he might rationalize away for her, just like he does for his girlfriend or his former warden. The rest might surprise him if he ever hears it.]

Yeah? What'd they lock you up for, anything that might come in handy around here?

Uh...

Like, killing someone? 'Cause that's what it was. You think I'm gonna need to kill people here?

[Oh sure, go straight to the tough question.

He draws a slow breath in, and then nods once.]

In the wrong flood, yeah. At a bad port, yeah. When we get some asshole on board who thinks if he kills enough people he'll get sent home early, hell yeah.

People think that?

[That sounds impressively backwards.]

But it ain't true, right?

More than one seems to have, yeah. They don't last very long around here.

And nah. No matter who you kill, you ain't getting sent home for it.

Good, 'cause I don't want to get sent back anyway. I like it here.

[He chuckles] I could hug you. At least someone around here gets it.

Does everyone else hate it or something? Why?

Yeah, you know how it goes. People fucked up their lives back home, or had 'em fucked up for them, they're angry about it, got no idea what to do with all that anger.

[She shrugs.]

Ain't much to be angry about here, as far as I can see.

Not around here, not much. But baggage kinda carries, you know? Sometimes it creeps up. [He eyes her. A murderer is not without baggage; either she's dealt with hers (and should be a Warden), or she's buried it deep.]

You mean to say if I'm angry back home I'll be angry here too?

Usually that's how it works, yeah. I mean no matter where you go, you are who you are, right? But if you were pissed off at life back home, it seems like you've got it managed now, so keep doing what you're doing. Just my advice.

[Not always, anyway.]

Or at your parents, at a boyfriend?

[She's rough around the edges, it's highly likely that she had a tough go of it at some point.]

I don't know. I ain't that close with my parents, and my boyfriend and I broke up.

Didn't know there was such a thing. But until I got here I never had an amicable kind of relationship anyway. What happened with you and your guy?

I went to prison. You don't really, uh... stay dating someone when you're in prison.

[He grins] Well, Ted Bundy got married in prison, but come to think of it he's not a guy you want to follow the example of.

'Course in this prison, people get around plenty. And it's mostly a good idea I think.
